This is a wonderful time of year for the special autumn light on the ornamental grass borders with their links to various artists which creates a marvellous atmosphere as you weave your way through the paths which transect them. Golden grasses of various kinds now joined by towering miscanthus vie with tall solidago, whispy purple verbenas, pink including Fatal Attraction and white echinaceas underplanted with blue Geranium Rozanne, sedums etc. The butterflies love them all. It is magical to wander through the paths which dissect the borders enjoying the movement and back light.
Many of the late flowering clematis will still be looking really good especially 'Polish Spirit' , rhederiana, Purpurea plena elegans, Kaiu, Blue Bell, Pamiat Serdtsa, and all the yellows, many with fluffy seedheads. We have species tangutica as well as Aurelion, Golden Tiara, Bravo and many others. The white Japanese anemones beneath the wisteria arches look marvellous beneath the yellow clematis.
By now the orchard is rich with fruit including colourful crab apples, and delicious apples and pears. The kitchen garden troughs and containers are overflowing with tcorn on the cob, runner beans, sunflowers, French beans, celeriac etc and there are still edible flowers to use in the edible flower garden including marigolds, mint, hollyhocks, roses etc all delicious to use in the kitchen. The containers are at their best in the old fish pond which is full of exotic fuchsias and begonias, spiky agaves and dasylirions, sumptuous black aeoniums and soft grey echeverias. They make a memorable display, complete with colourful step ladders. My new book on Container Gardening will be published in mid September (£9.99) providing lots of inspiration and ideas gleaned over the last twenty years. So many of my container are long term which just seem to get better and better as the years pass by. Shrubs, grasses and herbaceous plants are all used to great effect. So too are bulbs, both summer and spring flowering. Container gardening offers such a brilliant way to show off plants and I have lots of unusual ideas as my many visitors will testify....even telephones and egg shells are planted here!
